About
GRID is a 60 strong practice of architects and urban designers with a proven track record of designing and delivering exemplary residential and mixed-use developments. We have a range of commissions from masterplanning to interiors, with many new designs being developed while completing a programme of 8 projects in the next 12 months. Based in studios in London’s cultural Bankside, GRID undertakes projects across the UK and overseas with particular success in competitions.
Formed in 2010, with projects like Brewery Square in Clerkenwell and Montrose Place in Victoria as a legacy, the practice has been on a steady growth pattern to reflect competition success. The founders continue to drive the practice with a new and talented generation of architects already having had success in competitions. GRID was formed as a studio of people and avoids the ‘personality quest’ of most practices - hence the practice name. It is run in a democratic and collaborative way with all members having knowledge of the business and a say in the future direction and success.
Our confirmed view that architecture is pragmatic, flexible and most of all human, has separated us from practices that see buildings as personal, stylistic statements. We are urbanists first and foremost with experience in designing beautiful buildings in parts of cities, and creating parts of cities with beautiful buildings. Our architecture is seamlessly coordinated, and carefully detailed while being commercially successful. Good buildings are inspiring to use and contribute to better cities and lifestyles. The big idea is that a practice that recognises the architect as a specialist, and not a general practitioner, can more effectively create procedures and conditions that encourage excellence. Our research and investment is focused in the residential and commercial mixed-use sector.
